Frequently asked questions

Whether you are exploring therapy for the first time or returning after a life transition, we hope to make your introduction as transparent and comfortable as possible

WHAT HAPPENS IN A THERAPY CONSULTATION?

Our 30 minute consultations are an opportunity for you to get a feel for what counselling will be like. In our consultation you can get a sense of our therapeutic style and the modalities used in a full length counselling session. You’ll also get to share a bit about you and your current mental health concerns and you’ll get a sense of how they could possibly help.

This is also a great time for you to ask any questions about their practice, or the kind of clients they serve. You can come with planned questions or just get a feel for the therapist and if you feel it’s a good fit.

WHAT SHOULD I ASK IN A CONSULTATION?

So you made it to your consultation, congrats! Some things you might keep in mind to ask are:

  • What is your style of practice like?

  • Have you ever served a client from x background or with x issue?

  • How comfortable or prepared do you feel to serve this population if you do not personally identify as a part of it?

  • Do you have an area of specialization?

  • What does a beginning or end of session look like?

HOW OFTEN WOULD COUNSELLING SESSIONS HAPPEN?

In the beginning, as your therapist is getting to know you, weekly or bi-weekly sessions are best. If you are engaging in a specific kind of modality such as EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) your therapist may suggest to keep your sessions to weekly for continuity.

WHAT IS EMDR?

On that note, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) is one therapeutic method that treats specific traumatic beliefs, memories or thoughts. Ask about EMDR in your consultation and if this modality could be a good fit for you.
